Each day, more than 3,000 kids - over one million a year - become regular
smokers. In fact, if current trends are not reversed, more than 5 million
kids alive today will die prematurely from tobacco related illnesses.
Several factors contribute to this national health epidemic, including the
roughly $5 billion tobacco companies spend each year on advertising and
marketing gimmicks to attract new smokers.
Kids across the country are working to solve the problem of youth tobacco
use. On Kick Butts Day, April 4th, 2001, these young advocates will
participate in a variety of activities to educate people about the dangers of
tobacco and to limit kids' access to tobacco products.
